Port Macquarie Pride Walk – IDAHOBIT 2026

IDAHOBIT Flag Raising and Afternoon Tea – Benalla Rural City
Benalla Rural City Council is inviting the community to come together in support of LGBTQIA+ inclusion as part of this year’s IDAHOBIT events.
IDAHOBIT – the International Day Against LGBTQIA+ Discrimination – is recognised globally each year on 17 May. Benalla will mark the occasion a little earlier to ensure local businesses, services and community members can take part.

Mayor Cr Bernie Hearn said the day is an important reminder of the role communities play in creating safe and inclusive spaces.
“IDAHOBIT is about standing with our community as a whole and showing that everyone deserves to feel safe, respected and included,” Cr Hearn said.
“When we come together like this, we send a clear message that Benalla Rural City is a community where people can be themselves.”
As part of the week’s activities, the community is invited to a free screening of the Academy Award–winning film Moonlight at Benalla Cinema at 12.30pm, Sunday 17 May. This coming-of-age drama explores identity, belonging and connection.
IDAHOBIT marks the 1990 decision by the World Health Organization to remove homosexuality from the classification of diseases. The day aims to raise awareness of discrimination and promote equality through education and celebration.

Join this all-of-community LGBTIQA+ event celebrating IDAHOBIT including a cuppa, mingling, & a panel discussion about all things pride, diversity & Priscilla: Queen of the Desert! Locals and visitors alike are invited to share in the joy and celebrations of IDAHOBIT with a panel of 5 speakers acknowledging this special day with a panel of Priscilla cast and crew sharing their lived experiences and discussing the themes of the musical, just as relevant today as they were when the original film was made in 1994.
Doors open at 10.00am for mingling and finding your seats upstairs. Panel event commences from 10.30am – 11.30am, then enjoy some morning tea or lunch on-site at the Ulumbarra Cafe before the 1.00pm matinee performance of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert (NOTE: tickets starting from $48.75 per person MUST be pre-purchased seperately to this FREE event.)
IDAHOBIT is the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism, and Transphobia, celebrated annually on May 17th. It commemorates the World Health Organization’s decision on May 17, 1990, to remove homosexuality from the Classification of Diseases. The day focuses on raising awareness of LGBTQIA+ rights violations and celebrating diversity.
Big Gay BBQ 6: GrillOUT
The sixth annual Big Gay BBQ hosted by the Unifor Local 111 Pride Committee in recognition of International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT). Saturday 9 May 2026, 4pm–8pm, Lower Hume Park Picnic Area, New Westminster, BC, Canada. Free entry. Halal meat available; catered to vegans, vegetarians and those with Celiac disease. Chaps and Straps – Queer Line Dancing (IDAHOBIT)
Chaps and Straps presents Queer Line Dancing at Komedia Brighton on Tuesday 26 May 2026, 7–10pm. This event is created by and for LGBTQIA+ people, especially welcoming trans, intersex and non-binary participants. Dances are taught with options for different gender expressions and are designed to help participants connect with their body with joy. Completely beginner-friendly and open to all levels of confidence. The University of Sussex LGBTQ+ Staff Network is attending this event to mark IDAHOBIT 2026. Tickets via Komedia Brighton.
IDAHOBIT March – Trans Pride Southampton
Trans Pride Southampton hosts a protest march through Southampton for the whole LGBTQIA+ community on Sunday 17 May 2026, International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia. Marchers assemble at Watts Park at 11am; march begins at 12pm, proceeding through Guildhall Square, Above Bar, and High Street to Town Quay Park. After the march, attendees are invited to Dancing Man Brewery (wheelchair accessible). Organised in partnership with Southampton Spectrum, the LGBTQIA+ show on Voice FM.
Queer African Artists Exhibition – Goethe-Institut Johannesburg
A landmark pan-African exhibition opens at the Goethe-Institut Johannesburg (119 Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkwood) on 21 May 2026, 16:00–22:00, official opening at 18:00. Curated by filmmaker and author Renaldo Schwarp to commemorate IDAHOBIT 2026, the exhibition brings together queer artists from 22 countries across Sub-Saharan Africa — including countries where being openly queer carries very real legal and social consequences. Over 250 creatives responded to the open call. Media include visual art, performance, drag, music and interactive works. The exhibition explores how language and imagery have shaped queer identities, and how artists are reclaiming these tools. Free entry.
IDAHOBIT Service – Cork LGBTI+ Awareness Week
As part of Cork LGBTI+ Awareness Week 2026, an interfaith IDAHOBIT service is held at St Anne's Church, Cork, on Sunday 17 May at 10:15am with Rev. Meghan Farr and the congregation. The 2026 IDAHOBIT theme is 'At the Heart of Democracy.' Cork LGBTI+ Awareness Week brings together a programme of events across Cork City recognising the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia.
