Queer African Artists Exhibition – Goethe-Institut Johannesburg

A landmark pan-African exhibition opens at the Goethe-Institut Johannesburg (119 Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkwood) on 21 May 2026, 16:00–22:00, official opening at 18:00. Curated by filmmaker and author Renaldo Schwarp to commemorate IDAHOBIT 2026, the exhibition brings together queer artists from 22 countries across Sub-Saharan Africa — including countries where being openly queer carries very real legal and social consequences. Over 250 creatives responded to the open call. Media include visual art, performance, drag, music and interactive works. The exhibition explores how language and imagery have shaped queer identities, and how artists are reclaiming these tools. Free entry.
