Pride Week at Monash University

Date: 15 – 19 May 2023
Link: https://www.monash.edu/diversity-inclusion/pride-week/home
Info: Pride Week brings our community together to share stories, learn, teach and to celebrate our LGBTIQA+ community. Pride Week coincides with the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT). Acknowledged worldwide since 2004, this day of global awareness takes place each year on 17 May, a significant date in the ongoing fight for equality: On this day in 1990, the World Health Organisation declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder. Over 130 countries now celebrate IDAHOBIT. At Monash, we honour IDAHOBIT within Pride Week.

Diversity Storr IDAHOBIT event

Location: Online
Date: 16 May 2023
Time: 20:00 – 21:00
Link: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/idahobit-2023-responding-to-lgbtiq-resistance-and-backlash-tickets-622913760827
Info: An increase in resistance and backlash to advancement in LGBTIQ+ equalities in recent years has meant increased resistance and backlash, across many forms of public life. Trans and gender diverse people have been disproportionately affected by such resistance. UK charity Stonewall highlights that LGBTIQ+ recorded hate crimes in the UK have increased in recent years, and in Australia, in the last few months alone, there has been an uptick in anti-LGBTIQ+ related events and media reports. This can leave organisations in a precarious position – especially when they feel unprepared in dealing with and responding to resistance. The session will provide examples and recommendations in dealing with such resistance, and how to safeguard and plan for such events. Facilitated by Dr Ryan Storr, Director of the Diversity Storr, with guest speakers, this session will help anyone working with LGBTIQ+ communities, in the area of LGBTIQ+ inclusion, or working towards the advancement of LGBTIQ+ equalities. Captions will be available during the event, and all attendees will be emailed a teams link 2 days before the event.
