Melbourne getting ready for annual IDAHOT Flashmob

The Melbourne IDAHOT Flashmob this year is taking place at 6pm on Friday 17th May 2013 at a secret location opposite Flinders Street Station to ‘drop dead’ and commemorate those who have died due to homophobia and transphobia.
The rainbow theme chosen by the IDAHOT organisers overseas will be reflected in the colourful clothing worn by participants this year.
Who is Melbourne IDAHOT Flashmob?
The Melbourne IDAHOT Flashmob started in 2010 after being inspired by a ‘Die In’ at the Homomonument in Amsterdam, which paid tribute to those who died from homophobia and transphobia. The event was part of the ‘This Is Who We Are’ Conference of International Lesbian Gay Bisexual Trans and Queer Youth and Student Organization (IGLYO) in July 2009 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

What does Melbourne IDAHOT Flashmob do?
Melbourne IDAHOT Flashmob has been in operation since 2010 and has held the following events:
In 2011 a cheerleading flashmob armed with pom-poms took over Melbourne’s Southern Cross Station at the start of peak hour. One by one those involved in the flashmob pulled out pompoms and began the routine to remixed versions of Bjork’s Human Behaviour and My People by the Presets. In 2012, the organizers brought strangers together in the City of Melbourne and, starting at Flinders Street Station, joined hands to create a human chain with green balloons, showing solidarity with the sex and/or gender diverse community in tackling transphobia within and outside the GLBTIQ community (Video can be found at: http://www.samesame.com.au/gallery/17322/Melbourne-commemorates-IDAHOT-BIT-2012).
