Promoting the digital inclusion of LGBTIQ+ people and ensuring their safety in hostile environments

Promoting the digital inclusion of LGBTIQ+ people and ensuring their safety in hostile environments

Join ILGA World and the Délégation Genève Ville Solidaire of the City of Geneva for an online event addressing how to promote the digital inclusion of LGBTIQ+ people and ensure their safety in hostile environment.

The event is part of the City of Geneva’s annual campaign against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia 2025.

Digital spaces offer unprecedented opportunities for LGBTIQ+ people to connect, advocate for their rights, and build collective movements. However, an estimated 2.6 billion people remain offline due to inadequate infrastructure, high costs of devices, and lack of accessible content. This exclusion is even more pronounced for LGBTIQ+ individuals, particularly those facing intersecting oppression such as racialised, indigenous and disabled individuals to name a few.

Yet, digital spaces can also expose activists and community members to cyber-harassment, blackmail, and intrusive surveillance, especially in regions where discriminatory laws target LGBTIQ+ individuals.

This panel will present the research and work done by three international organisations on the challenges of digital exclusion and dangers faced by LGBTIQ+ individuals in different areas of the world.

Roundtable guests:

  • Shreshtha Das (they/them) – Researcher/Advisor on Gender, Gender, Racial Justice, Refugees and Migrants Rights Programme at Amnesty International
  • Daniele Paletta (he/him) – Communications Manager at ILGA World
  • Rasha Younes (she/her) – Interim Director, LGBT Rights Program at Human Rights Watch
  • Dr Hazbi Avdiji (they/them, moderator) – Lecturer on Diversity in the Digital Age at the Haute École de Gestion de Genéve

International Conference on Lawyers Committed to LGBTQI+ Rights in Paris

International Conference on Lawyers Committed to LGBTQI+ Rights in Paris

JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF), in collaboration with the French organization Stop Homophobie, hosted the International Conference on Lawyers Committed to LGBTQI+ Rights at the prestigious auditorium of the French National Bar Council (Conseil National des barreaux) in Paris on May 13, 2025. The event underscored the essential role of legal professionals—both in France and globally—in defending LGBTQI+ rights and combating discrimination.

The conference opened with remarks from Terrence Katchadourian, Secretary General of Stop Homophobie, who shared findings from the organization’s annual report on anti-LGBT+ violence in France. He emphasized the urgent need for increased pro bono legal support for LGBTQI+ victims and called on the legal community to remain actively engaged in the fight for equality.

Advocate Shahanur Islam, a Bangladeshi human rights lawyer and founder-president of JMBF, presented alarming findings from JMBF’s monitoring reports spanning 2022 to 2025. He detailed a sharp rise in violence against LGBTQI+ individuals in Bangladesh, particularly following the political transition in August 2024.

“With the fall of the previous government and the installation of an interim administration, attacks on LGBTQI+ individuals have escalated to unprecedented levels,” said Islam. He urged the international community to engage with Bangladesh’s current leadership, advocating for the repeal of Section 377 of the Bangladesh Penal Code, which criminalizes homosexuality, and the protection of LGBTQI+ rights across the country.

Etienne Deshoulières, a lawyer at the Paris Bar, discussed the power of strategic litigation in advancing LGBTQI+ rights in France and across Europe. He highlighted landmark legal cases that have led to significant progress and challenged discriminatory practices.

Adding a global legal perspective, Camille Schaltenbrand, a jurist specializing in international law, examined the criminalization of homosexuality worldwide. Using historical examples, she demonstrated how legal advocacy has played a decisive role in the journey toward decriminalization and equality.

The conference brought together approximately 50 participants from various countries and professional fields, including Bangladeshi LGBTQI+ individuals who have personally experienced rights violations. Their testimonies reinforced the urgent need for international solidarity and coordinated legal action.

The event served as a critical platform for strengthening transnational collaboration among lawyers, activists, and human rights defenders committed to ensuring justice, dignity, and equal rights for LGBTQI+ individuals around the world.
