To mark the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT), ARTICLE 19 hosts an evening of discussion about the freedom of expression of sexual orientation and gender identity.
Speak Up and Speak Out: Freedom to express sexual orientation and gender identity
Freedom of expression is a fundamental right. However, many people are silenced because of their sexual orientation or gender identity, or for speaking out on issues affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people.
The evening will bring together activists, policy experts and LGBT people for a lively and international discussion about the challenges LGBT people face in exercising their right to freedom of expression worldwide.
To join the discussion online or ask questions in advance follow the hashtag #IDAHOTSpeakUp
The event will take place on Friday 16 May, 6 – 8.30pm at the Free Word Centre, 60 Farringdon Road, London EC1R 3GA and is part of the Islington Word Festival 2014.
Speakers:
David Diaz-Jogeix, ARTICLE 19 (Chair)
Lela Kogbara, Islington Council
Alistair Stewart, Kaleidoscope Trust

The panel discussion will be followed by a drinks reception to allow the discussion to continue informally.
