The Equality Rights Group marked International Day Against Homophobia for the fourth year in Gibraltar.

Speaking outside John Mackintosh Square today, ERG Chairman was joined by Minister for Justice Gilbert Licudi and Opposition spokesperson Jaime Netto.

Mr Alvarez said: “In the midst of the big issues, the big talk, the big politics and everything else, we all too often lose sight of what it really is that has motivated so many people around this planet to say enough is enough on the question of sexual orientation discrimination.

“And today, the International Day when we put a name to this aggression on so many lives – homophobia – is the time when we must stand up and speak out to ensure we all do our bit to bring an end to this unwarranted and unnecessary violence of the mind – and, unfortunately still in too many countries, of the body as well.”

He also called for the establishment of an annual Press Awards system “to recognize the important role of the media and its professionals”.

“They are quite rightly subject to scrutiny and criticism, but we must also promote and support a free press. Strong democracy and civil society are just not possible without them,” he added.

Minister Licudi said he is working together with ERG to criminalise any hate crimes that do take place in Gibraltar, whether it be on the basis of race, religion or sexual orientation.   

Also in support of today’s IDAHO rally were representatives from different unions in Gibraltar, the editor for GBC News Stephen Neish as well as Gibraltar Chronicle Editor Brian Reyes.
