On November 20th, the world will be commemorating the Transgender Day of Remembrance.
This Day exists since 1998 to honor the many friends from the Trans community who have fallen under transphobic hate crime, and to raise our voice against all forms of Transphobia
This Day should be a reminder to all of us, that Trans people bear a disproportionate share of the violence which the LGBTI community faces as a whole, and that we should stand by them.
This Day should also be an opportunity to raise awareness that Transphobia does not only concern people who are identified as ‘Trans’. Transphobia is the tip of the iceberg of machismo and misogyny. It rest on the ‘sacred’ principle that no man should ever cross the boundary to the ‘inferior and degrading’ status of a woman. And that no woman should ever dare try to get away from her ‘inferior and degrading’ condition.
Every time we let Transphobia happen, we condemn ourselves to conform to dominant gender norms. Fighting Transphobia is indissociable from any fight for gender equity and women’s rights.
