Care/Resist: Merawat Diri Kita & Perlawanan (Care/Resist: Taking Care of Ourselves & Resistance)

Care/Resist: Merawat Diri Kita & Perlawanan (Care/Resist: Taking Care of Ourselves & Resistance)

“Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, is a self-preservation. And that is an act of political warfare” – Audre Lorde

How have we been finding ourselves and our communities in recent days? Audre Lorde reminds us that self-care and collective care are inseparable parts of our resistance. In commemoration of IDAHOBIT 2026, PurpleCode Collective and Kolektif Merawat Ingatan present a space to share stories, feelings, and hopes about the interweaving of care and resistance by watching and reflecting on the documentary A Litany for Survival: The Life and Work of Audre Lorde (1995, Third World News Reel, restored version) and a short film compilation by Koalisi Kebebasan Berserikat (KKB).

The session will continue with a creative response activity co-facilitated by the organizers, where participants are encouraged to respond to the life and works of Audre Lorde and the three short films through writing, creating, or other forms of response.

Queere Provinz / provincia queer?

Queere Provinz / provincia queer?

IDAHOBIT 2026-Don’t leave us behind: Struggles for LGBTQI+ Refugees and Asylum Seekers

Thailand is seen as a paradise for LGBTQI+ people in the region. However, they exist in a precarious, often invisible state, facing high risks of detention and abuse due to a lack of legal recognition.

The session aims to bring attention to those that flee persecution, with undocumented status, struggling with limited protection, and facing stigma and discrimination or violence.

IDAHOBIT 2026-Decriminalisation in Asia Pacific: Are we moving forward?

IDAHOBIT 2026-Decriminalisation in Asia Pacific: Are we moving forward?

We have seen positive efforts in terms of decriminalisation of same-sex sexual acts in India (2018), Bhutan (2021), Singapore (2022) and most recently Cook Islands (2023). However, seventeen countries in the region still have colonial laws prohibiting consensual sex between men.

The session aims to raise awareness for LGBTQI+ rights and the lives of those who are from countries with criminalization laws, and profiling the Amsterdam Rainbow Dress that has been centerfold for numerous celebrations and events related to the decriminalization of LGBTQI+.

The Fight Is Global: LGBTIQ Activists in Conversation

The Fight Is Global: LGBTIQ Activists in Conversation

Join us for a discussion on progress (and backlash) within the LGBTIQ human rights movement.

To celebrate the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia, please join the Consulate General of Sweden in New York, Friends of the High Line, and Outright International on May 19 for a discussion on progress (and backlash) within the LGBTIQ human rights movement.

In New York, a city whose courage in 1969 at Stonewall inspired the global LGBTIQ movement, we understand the importance of protecting the rights that generations have fought for. Fortunately, there are lessons from around the world for us to draw upon. LGBTIQ activists in other countries have faced these conditions and worse before and survived them. The lessons from their experiences, strategies, and resiliencies are vital to learn from in a moment like this. Join us for a conversation about what it means to fight for LGBTIQ rights as a global community. In an increasingly globalized world, a setback anywhere weakens our movement everywhere, and a victory anywhere strengthens it too.

In the last decade, the progress that the LGBTIQ community has made has been astounding. However, these hard-fought successes were also noticed by those who oppose LGBTIQ rights. This global backlash to the LGBTIQ human rights movement has built vast international networks to coordinate their strategies and spread the same false narratives across borders. The attacks on the LGBTIQ community happening right here in the United States today are part of a global playbook, tested abroad and then imported back to places like New York when the opposition saw an opening.

At the event, U.S. Drag Activist Marti Gould Cummings and Iraqi Activist and Attorney Amir Ashour will join global LGBTIQ movement leader and Outright Executive Director Maria Sjödin, whose career includes leading the largest LGBTIQ organization in Sweden, RFSL, in conversation. They will discuss the global nature of the struggle for LGBTIQ rights and the need for those who advocate for LGBTIQ rights in New York City to support the fights for rights everywhere. The speakers will discuss what transnational movement-building looks like in practice and what we can learn from one another in an increasingly challenging political moment.
