A landmark pan-African exhibition opens at the Goethe-Institut Johannesburg (119 Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkwood) on 21 May 2026, 16:00–22:00, official opening at 18:00. Curated by filmmaker and author Renaldo Schwarp to commemorate IDAHOBIT 2026, the exhibition brings together queer artists from 22 countries across Sub-Saharan Africa — including countries where being openly queer carries very real legal and social consequences. Over 250 creatives responded to the open call. Media include visual art, performance, drag, music and interactive works. The exhibition explores how language and imagery have shaped queer identities, and how artists are reclaiming these tools. Free entry.

Zero is committed to giving queer communities the pen and mic to reclaim their own narratives for resilience, resistance, and health. This year, the Zero’s May Week of Action against Homophobia/Transphobia will occur May 18–22, 2026. Immediately following the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT, May 17).
IDAHOBIT’s 2026 theme, “At the Heart of Democracy,” reminding us that true democracy cannot exist when LGBTQ+ people are silenced, targeted, or disappeared. In solidarity, our Zero Campaign theme this year is “Our Pen, Our Mic”—a declaration that we refuse to be erased or stay silent in the face of such monstrous injustice.
Zero May 2026 Week of Action Lineup
May 20st: 1PM -2:30 PM EST: El Arte Sana (Click to register)

Join us for a discussion on progress (and backlash) within the LGBTIQ human rights movement.
To celebrate the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia, please join the Consulate General of Sweden in New York, Friends of the High Line, and Outright International on May 19 for a discussion on progress (and backlash) within the LGBTIQ human rights movement.
In New York, a city whose courage in 1969 at Stonewall inspired the global LGBTIQ movement, we understand the importance of protecting the rights that generations have fought for. Fortunately, there are lessons from around the world for us to draw upon. LGBTIQ activists in other countries have faced these conditions and worse before and survived them. The lessons from their experiences, strategies, and resiliencies are vital to learn from in a moment like this. Join us for a conversation about what it means to fight for LGBTIQ rights as a global community. In an increasingly globalized world, a setback anywhere weakens our movement everywhere, and a victory anywhere strengthens it too.
In the last decade, the progress that the LGBTIQ community has made has been astounding. However, these hard-fought successes were also noticed by those who oppose LGBTIQ rights. This global backlash to the LGBTIQ human rights movement has built vast international networks to coordinate their strategies and spread the same false narratives across borders. The attacks on the LGBTIQ community happening right here in the United States today are part of a global playbook, tested abroad and then imported back to places like New York when the opposition saw an opening.
At the event, U.S. Drag Activist Marti Gould Cummings and Iraqi Activist and Attorney Amir Ashour will join global LGBTIQ movement leader and Outright Executive Director Maria Sjödin, whose career includes leading the largest LGBTIQ organization in Sweden, RFSL, in conversation. They will discuss the global nature of the struggle for LGBTIQ rights and the need for those who advocate for LGBTIQ rights in New York City to support the fights for rights everywhere. The speakers will discuss what transnational movement-building looks like in practice and what we can learn from one another in an increasingly challenging political moment.

Digital technologies increasingly shape how LGBTIQ+ people express themselves, organise politically and access services. Yet these same technologies can expose communities to discrimination, profiling, surveillance and exclusion. This edition of the Digital Rights Lounge explores the intersection between digital rights and LGBTIQ+ rights, bringing together activists, researchers and policymakers to discuss how digital infrastructures affect queer lives and what can be done to effectively protect rights in the digital age.

As in previous editions, European LGBTI civil society organisations will present their annual maps and indexes, offering a comprehensive overview of LGBTI rights in Europe. The exhibition on homosexuality and trans* identity aims to break down barriers and raise awareness. Twelve roll-up displays provide visitors with information on the history of homosexuality: Until when were homosexual acts criminalized in Germany? What do the colors of the rainbow flag represent? What do penguins have to do with homosexuality? A wealth of interesting, sad, but also humorous information has been visualized in an entertaining way. The exhibition makes it clear that history is not a linear progression. Its images depict a constant ebb and flow—and serve as a reminder that today’s status quo cannot be taken for granted.
Tuesday, May 19 2026 – Wednesday, June 03 2026
Time: daily from 8:00 am to 6 pm
To mark the start of the exhibition, the Catholic University Community KHG Saarbrücken and the Diversity Office are hosting an opening event on May 19, from 4 to 6 pm
Program:
Musical opening: Matthis Löw Harfe
Welcome with a short talk on the topic “Queer and the Catholic Church”: Katrin Altmaier, KHG Saarbrücken
Short presentation on “IDAHOBITA”: Tamara Wagner, Diversity Office

🌈 IDAHOBIT SAMOA 2026 🌈
“At the Heart of Democracy”
Visibility is democracy. Safety is a right. Community is power. ✊🏽💜
This year, Brown Girl Woke, Samoa Fa’afafine & Fa’atama Association (SFA), ILGA Oceania and OHCHR come together to create a space for talanoa, storytelling, learning and community healing through our Know Your Rights work and youth-led media.
In Samoa, democracy must include all of us — especially our fa’afafine, fa’atama, queer and marginalized youth whose voices are too often silenced, mocked or excluded.
This is more than an event.
It is about identity, dignity, protection, chosen family and creating safer futures for our young people.

With our modest team and capabilities, M-Coalition published an online campaign raising a voice against homophobia+ as well as its enablers such as colonialism and capitalism. As our region continues to be ravished by conflicted inflicted by the US and Israel continuing patterns of colonialism and destruction, today we revolt, and we use our street language to say FCK homophobia, FCK l’homophobie and in our tongue ك س م الهوموفوبيا
We intentionally used street language, passing under META radar through missing vowels and irregular text spacing (arabic) the colonizer who brought homophobia into our communities understands only street language, and we are here to stand our ground
The song we used is also a very popular underground song, where the singer asks her lover that they elope, in our case it was a perfect match: “Baby, would you like us to get married in secret, and go live away from everyone…”

IDAHOBIT-2026: ‘In the Heart of Democracy’ photography exhibition to open
Every year, 17 May is observed worldwide as the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia. This year, the day is being observed worldwide under the slogan ‘In the Heart of Democracy.’
To mark this day, as part of the LGBT Centre’s ‘Art for Rights’ initiative, a photography exhibition will be held at Hөх Нар Сав Space from 15 to 28 May 2026. The exhibition opening will take place on 15 May 2026 at 18:00.
The ‘Art for Rights’ initiative aims to promote the understanding of human rights through art, support artists on LGBTQI+ themes, and create a space for queer artists. Art is a powerful tool that not only critiques social, political and cultural realities but also calls for positive change and spreads love and pride.
To cite the history of AIDAHOBIT Day, on 17 May 1990 —when the World Health Organisation officially removed same-sex orientation from its list of mental disorders—was a particularly significant event for the LGBTQI+ movement. Subsequently, in 2004 the United Nations recognised this day as a human rights day, and it has been celebrated worldwide.
In Mongolia, IDAHOBIT has been celebrated since 2011, and within this framework, science-based, factual information about sexual orientation, gender identity and expression is disseminated to the public, organising multifaceted activities aimed at fostering a culture of respect for human rights.
The exhibition will encompass various forms and genres of contemporary photography, bringing to the public works that express the lives, experiences, and voices of LGBTQI+ people through art. Of the more than 80 works submitted, 65 have been selected to be exhibited, and will also be featured in Pride magazine and the exhibition catalogue.
This exhibition will be a significant event, uniting the values of art, human rights and democracy, and fostering understanding, empathy and mutual respect among the public.
Exhibition hours: 15th–28th May, 11:00–19:00. Admission free.
Exhibition opening: 15th May
